Thursday Morning Update: Changes On The Way

10/26/23 Thursday 7:45 am

The models are showing slightly better consistency.  It appears that we may see some impactful snow over the weekend in the higher elevations. Low pressure will work through the northern portions of the state later today. This could trigger light snow showers across northern portions of the forecast area at or above 9,000 feet.

A shortwave trough will move through Friday night and temps should be cool enough to produce snow showers across northern portions of the forecast area Friday night and Saturday morning. The snow showers could fall in the mid-elevations before the weekend is over as the coldest temperatures of the season work into our area by Monday.

Models have not come to an agreement on snow totals or when the heaviest snow will fall.  The European and Canadian models are showing double-digit totals for the ski areas by Monday. I still am not confident with what I am seeing on the models to arrive at a forecast. Early season storms don’t usually track far enough south to be as impactful as the European model is showing.

As I mentioned earlier don’t be surprised to see a few afternoon snow showers over the 550 passes today. I will try to get a better handle on things by tomorrow. At this point, I don’t expect anything significant in the lower elevations this weekend.
