Low Impact First Storm: Potentially High Impact Second Storm

3/12/24 Tuesday 3:30 pm

A low-impact storm will affect mostly the higher elevations tonight through Thursday morning. There are several advisories and watches in place, but I am not going to cover them in detail today. The winter weather advisory starts at midnight and lasts through Thursday morning. I bet the NWS wishes they could have that one back.

A winter storm watch is set to go into place late Thursday through Saturday. That holds the best promise for an impactful winter storm. I will update you on that storm tomorrow and put out a forecast on Thursday afternoon.

I don’t believe the first advisory is warranted. However, the one place that would not surprise me with higher totals with the first system would be Telluride and RMP.

For now, through Thursday morning, I expect 3 to 6 inches of snow for Telluride, Red Mountain, Purgatory, and Wolf Creek.

Here are the latest model runs showing the totals through Thursday morning, they are trending down.

European

GFS

Canadian

Let’s get this first little storm out of the way, so we can hopefully move on to the major winter storm late Thursday through Saturday, at this point the models are double-digit mountain snow totals, with accumulating snow in the lower elevations (fingers crossed).
