Thursday Afternoon: Snow Returns Tonight

01/08/26 Thursday 3 pm

I am just saying, don’t be surprised if a couple of inches of snow, or more, fall over the southern portions of the forecast area overnight and tomorrow before moving out of the area in the afternoon.

There is a big divide between the GFS and European at moment. GFS has more snow in the northern forecast area (north of Purgatory).  The European model actually stretches the snow from New Mexico (Farmington) into SW La Plata County, Durango, Bayfield, 240 corridor up to Vallecito, Forest Lakes, all of Archuleta County along 160 up to Wolf Creek. Enhanced snow would develop above 7,200 feet.

NWS appears to be backing the GFS, increasing the snowfall totals for the mountains by an additional 3 to 6 inches of snow tonight into tomorrow.

Maybe both will be right, that’s what I am rooting for!

Seems like about a half century ago when I read an article commenting on the amount of snow that had fallen on Wolf Creek….it was about 500 inches of snow…would love to see that again. In ’79 New years morning my husband and I got back home to our place up Florida Road…there were only about 5 homes in our subdivision just above Helen’s store. I rode up to the house on the back of a neighbors snow mobile and my husband made it up a few minutes later with our jeep. A long time neighbor and friend from over in Texas Creek called a few minutes after we were both home. His family had homesteaded their ranch.
I was literally frozen from the ride up. When I answered the phone he said “Good morning neighbor…it’s 40 below” …. indeed it was. Fortunately our house was still at 55 degrees and our wood stove got it back to normal. The next day it was only minus 20…even got my old ’66 pick up to start.

Ooops…didn’t mean to hit the new posts…already there…
